Submission Guidelines

Thank you for your interest in Monolog Cabin.  We are a Tucson-based community of literate funny people who perform somewhat regularly at downtown's Club Congress, in the historic Hotel Congress.

The material we perform is what makes us unique.  We recite our own original short stories and essays, anywhere from 5 to 12 minutes in length.  Our requirements are that the pieces be first person, smart, and laugh out loud funny.

Our material is developed by the individual writers within a workshop context in which everyone's work is subject to constructive criticism.  Writers are expected to improve their work until it is performance-ready, at which point issues of presentation are considered.  Don't worry though: we read our works directly off the page.  Memorization is not part of what we do, and we are not a company of actors.  We do though have a reputation that we're proud of, and we intend to keep our standards high.

The difference between our work and stand-up comedy is that each of our pieces comprises a coherent whole--with a beginning, middle and end--as opposed to an assemblage of one-liners.  The works can be fictional or non-fictional (though they usually come off as non-fictional), in your own persona or that of someone else.  Humor should come from the context of the piece.

Material submitted will either be a) rejected, b) returned to you with suggestions for improvements, or c) accepted provisionally.  Provisional acceptance means you'll be invited to participate in our development process of constructive criticism, rewrites (by you), and preparation for performance.  Provisional acceptance is not a guarantee that you will eventually be allowed to recite or perform your work publicly with us.  That decision rests with the producers of Monolog Cabin and their satisfaction with the development of your work.

Please note: Guidelines are great, but the best way to get what we do is to come see one of our shows

A token payment is made to performers in our regular Monolog Cabin shows, (while our occasional Themed Comedy Nights are completely uncompensated).  Please do not submit unless the experience of participating in our process and the joy you would get from potentially performing is payment enough.  If our own experience is any guide, it will be.

I want to submit.
